    Self-select groups increase stability but reduce collaboration in high school physics

    Group configurations shape social skills and learning outcomes by fostering student interaction and collaboration. Yet, the factors influencing group formation, social cohesion, and group stability have remained understudied in physics education. Here, we examine these factors in a cohort of 90 students from ninth and tenth grades at a private school in Chile. For a semester-long physics project, students were assigned to groups either through random allocation (control group) or given the autonomy to form their own groups (experimental group). Our findings indicate that the groups formed by choice developed stronger friendship bonds throughout the semester, while the groups formed randomly demonstrated greater levels of cooperation and more frequent changes in membership, suggesting weaker social cohesion. Additionally, tenth-grade students were more likely to stay in their original groups, possibly indicating increased social maturity. These findings emphasize the ongoing challenge in education of balancing student choice in group formation with the need for diverse group compositions that enhance learning. This study provides practical recommendations for physics teachers and researchers.

    Mapping employment dynamics in public agencies with payroll data: A methodological framework with an application to Chile

    <jats:p>This study introduces a novel, replicable methodology for analyzing employment dynamics within public sector agencies, focusing on turnover and staff longevity. The methodology is designed to be generalizable and applicable to diverse national contexts where detailed administrative data is available. Using payroll data from over 325,000 Chilean civil servants (2006—2020), we apply mixed-effects Cox survival models and linear mixed models to examine patterns of employment stability across state agencies. By incorporating Propensity Score Matching, we further enhance the causal interpretation of turnover changes, especially in post-election years. Finally, we introduce two key metrics—Service Frailty and Relative Turnover Difference—to quantify long-term stability and short-term, post-electoral disruptions. Our findings highlight substantial differences in turnover patterns between regular and post-election years, as well as significant inter-agency heterogeneity in turnover and employee longevity, largely driven by latent agency characteristics. While major covariates like contract type and staff rank account for some variation, much of the disparity stems from agency-specific factors. This framework offers precise, cross-nationally comparable benchmarks for understanding public sector employment dynamics. Additionally, the methodology contributes to the literature by providing transparent and scalable tools for analyzing workforce stability across different contexts.</jats:p>

    Modeling the Spread of Tuberculosis in Semiclosed Communities

    We address the problem of long-term dynamics of tuberculosis (TB) and latent tuberculosis (LTB) in semiclosed communities. These communities are congregate settings with the potential for sustained daily contact for weeks, months, and even years between their members. Basic examples of these communities are prisons, but certain urban/rural communities, some schools, among others could possibly fit well into this definition. These communities present a sort of ideal conditions for TB spread. In order to describe key relevant dynamics of the disease in these communities, we consider a five compartments SEIR model with five possible routes toward TB infection: primary infection after a contact with infected and infectious individuals (fast TB), endogenous reactivation after a period of latency (slow TB), relapse by natural causes after a cure, exogenous reinfection of latently infected, and exogenous reinfection of recovered individuals. We discuss the possible existence of multiple endemic equilibrium states and the role that the two types of exogenous reinfections in the long-term dynamics of the disease could play.

    Brain’s Energy After Stroke: From a Cellular Perspective Toward Behavior

    <jats:p>Stroke is a neurological condition that impacts activity performance and quality of life for survivors. While neurological impairments after the event explain the performance of patients in specific activities, the origin of such impairments has traditionally been explained as a consequence of structural and functional damage to the nervous system. However, there are important mechanisms related to energy efficiency (trade-off between biological functions and energy consumption) at different levels that can be related to these impairments and restrictions: first, at the neuronal level, where the availability of energy resources is the initial cause of the event, as well as determines the possibilities of spontaneous recovery. Second, at the level of neural networks, where the “small world” operation of the network is compromised after the stroke, implicating a high energetic cost and inefficiency in the information transfer, which is related to the neurological recovery and clinical status. Finally, at the behavioral level, the performance limitations are related to the highest cost of energy or augmented energy expenditure during the tasks to maintain the stability of the segment, system, body, and finally, the behavior of the patients. In other words, the postural homeostasis. In this way, we intend to provide a synthetic vision of the energy impact of stroke, from the particularities of the operation of the nervous system, its implications, as one of the determinant factors in the possibilities of neurological, functional, and behavioral recovery of our patients.</jats:p>
