Item type:Publication, Oxytocin Levels in Response to Others’ Suffering According to the Type of Conviction for Intimate Partner Violence Against Women(SAGE Publications, 2025-11-29) ;Agar Marín-Morales ;Javier Comes-Fayos; ;Marisol LilaÁngel Romero-Martínez<jats:p>Biopsychosocial research focusing on male perpetrators is essential to reduce the high prevalence and recidivism of Intimate Partner Violence against Women (IPVAW). Our study aimed to investigate the salivary oxytocin response to others’ suffering, based on the type of conviction for IPVAW (psychological or physical), risk of recidivism, and sexist schemas. The final sample consisted of 31 men convicted of IPVAW (13 for psychological and 18 for physical violence) and 33 men without a criminal history. Psychological tests were completed, and salivary oxytocin samples were collected before and after a violence-focused empathy induction task. Physical perpetrators of IPVAW exhibited a decreasing trend in salivary oxytocin levels in response to the empathic task, whereas psychological perpetrators and non-offenders showed an increase. Linear regression indicated that lower levels of salivary oxytocin were predicted by a higher risk of recidivism, benevolent sexism, and convictions for physical IPVAW. This preliminary study suggests that the oxytocin response to empathy in perpetrators of IPVAW depends on several criminological and psychological variables. These results could help implement more efficient intervention programs tailored to the characteristics of perpetrators, ultimately enhancing their effectiveness and reducing the risk of recidivism.</jats:p>2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Fernandez<jats:sec id="S0924933825019303_sec6070" sec-type="intro"><jats:title>Introduction</jats:title><jats:p> Alexithymia is a relatively stable personality construct that reflects the difficulty in distinguishing and describing one’s own emotions along with a concrete and externally directed style of thinking. Alexithymia increases the risk of development and worsens the course of several psychiatric illnesses, such as depression or addiction. It is also associated with the development of eating disorders and psychosomatic illnesses. Additionally, it has a negative impact on the ability to regulate emotions and is also associated with a reduced empathic capacity, interpersonal problems and even violent behaviors. Interestingly, in intimate partner violence, it has been observed that alexithymia is associated with both exercising and receiving abuse. However, social behavior, in dynamics of cooperation within pairs and groups of several individuals, has not been studied much in relation to alexithymia.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec id="S0924933825019303_sec6071"><jats:title>Objectives</jats:title><jats:p>We evaluated the impact of alexithymia in social behavior in three aspects: generosity, trust and submission.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec id="S0924933825019303_sec6072" sec-type="methods"><jats:title>Methods</jats:title><jats:p>After completing an online survey that evaluated their levels of alexithymia using the TAS-20, as well as depression and loneliness, 67 participants (27 men), aged 19 to 46, attended our laboratory. There, after answering the PANAS survey, they played three economic games using tiles: the Dictator game, the Trust game, and the Public Goods game. Each participant played in a group of four, with three of the group members being confederates whose contributions were pre-established and consistent across all sessions and participants. In the Public Goods game, confederates initially contributed a significant percentage (80-95%) of their endowment in the first round, but in subsequent rounds, they drastically reduced their contributions to nearly nonexistent levels. After playing all three games, the PANAS was reassessed. Finally, on the same day as the face-to-face session, participants completed a second online survey that assessed cognitive and emotional empathy, early life adversity, resilience and perceived stress.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec id="S0924933825019303_sec6073" sec-type="results"><jats:title>Results</jats:title><jats:p>In the Public Goods game, the number of rounds in which participants contributed more than their initial contribution in the first round was used as a measure of submissive behavior. This variable correlated with the participants’ level of alexithymia (β=0.544). Additionally, this same index was also negatively associated with empathy and positively related to reported loneliness. A similar pattern was observed between alexithymia and empathy (β=-0.323) and loneliness (β=0.473). In contrast, total contributions made in the Public Goods game, the Dictator game (generosity), and the Trust game did not correlate with alexithymia.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec id="S0924933825019303_sec6074" sec-type="conclusions"><jats:title>Conclusions</jats:title><jats:p>Our results suggest that alexithymia is connected to greater submissive behavior in group interactions. Despite efforts to understand this condition and find better treatments, the burden imposed by this disease continues to rise. Most approved pharmacological treatments for depression focus on controlling the availability of monoamines in synapses. However, accumulating evidence suggests that neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and reduced hippocampal neurogenesis play key roles as causal factors in the development of major depression symptoms. Therefore, preclinical testing of pharmacological approaches targeting these factors is essential. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are known for their potential as powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, exerting neuroprotective actions in the brain. They produce various therapeutic molecules in a paracrine manner, collectively known as secretome. Methods: In this work, we evaluated the antidepressant potential of repeated intranasal administration of MSC-derived secretome in an animal model of major depressive disorder induced by chronic mild unpredictable stress. Results: We observed that intranasal administration of MSC-derived secretome reduced the appearance of some of the behavioral parameters commonly associated with major depression, including anhedonic, apathetic, and anxious behaviors, inducing a strong reduction in the overall depression score compared to vehicle-treated animals. At the structural level, secretome administration prevented increased astrocyte density and the atrophy of astrocyte processes observed in vehicle-treated stressed animals. Additionally, secretome administration induced an increase in myelin levels and oligodendroglia in the cortex. Conclusions: Our data suggests that intranasal administration of MSC-derived secretome may represent a potential therapeutic alternative to current treatments for this devastating pathology.</jats:p>1Scopus© Citations 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Antioxidant Biomolecules and Their Potential for the Treatment of Difficult-to-Treat Depression and Conventional Treatment-Resistant Depression(2022); ;Alba Ávila ;Koen Schruers<jats:p>Major depression is a devastating disease affecting an increasing number of people from a young age worldwide, a situation that is expected to be worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. New approaches for the treatment of this disease are urgently needed since available treatments are not effective for all patients, take a long time to produce an effect, and are not well-tolerated in many cases; moreover, they are not safe for all patients. There is solid evidence showing that the antioxidant capacity is lower and the oxidative damage is higher in the brains of depressed patients as compared with healthy controls. Mitochondrial disfunction is associated with depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders, and this dysfunction can be an important source of oxidative damage. Additionally, neuroinflammation that is commonly present in the brain of depressive patients highly contributes to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). There is evidence showing that pro-inflammatory diets can increase depression risk; on the contrary, an anti-inflammatory diet such as the Mediterranean diet can decrease it. Therefore, it is interesting to evaluate the possible role of plant-derived antioxidants in depression treatment and prevention as well as other biomolecules with high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential such as the molecules paracrinely secreted by mesenchymal stem cells. In this review, we evaluated the preclinical and clinical evidence showing the potential effects of different antioxidant and anti-inflammatory biomolecules as antidepressants, with a focus on difficult-to-treat depression and conventional treatment-resistant depression.</jats:p>Scopus© Citations 57 1
