Item type:Publication, Spanish version of the ICIQ-Bowel questionnaire among colorectal cancer patients: construct and criterion validity(2023); ;Luz Alejandra Lorca ;Mónica Martinez-Mardones ;Marta Natalia Pizarro-HinojosaGonzalo Sebastián Rebolledo-Diaz
Abstract
Purpose
Bowel complaints are very common among patients with colorectal cancer. However, the most used questionnaires for colorectal cancer survivors do not comprehensively comprise bowel symptoms. This study aimed to examine construct and criterion validity, as well as internal consistency, of the Chilean Version of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Bowel Module (ICIQ-B) among people with colorectal cancer.
Methods
Cross-sectional, validation study performed with 106 colorectal cancer patients from Hospital del Salvador, Chile. Bowel function was assessed with the ICIQ-B. Construct validity was assessed with confirmatory factor analysis and hypothesis testing. Specific items of a quality-of-life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-CR29) were used to correlate with similar ICIQ-B items for criterion validity. For internal consistency, Cronbach’s alpha was computed.
Results
For construct validity, the confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three factors model did not fit our data. Meanwhile, hypothesis testing favored the construct validity of the instrument, considering that rectal cancer patients showed worse bowel pattern (p = 0.001), bowel control (p = 0.001) and quality of life (p < 0.001) scores compared to colon cancer patients. In addition, those patients assessed before surgery also presented worse scores bowel control (p = 0.023) and quality of life (p = 0.009) compared to post-surgical patients. Regarding criterion validity, the ICIQ-B items showed a significant correlation with similar QLQ-CR29 items. The internal reliability of the instrument was good (Cronbach’s α = 0.909).
Conclusion
Considering that this questionnaire appraises bowel function in more depth, it is recommended for use in clinical practice and research with colorectal cancer patients.
2Scopus© Citations 4 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Cross‐cultural adaptation and validation of the KOOS, JR questionnaire for assessing knee osteoarthritis in Spanish‐speaking patients(2023) ;Rodrigo Guiloff ;Magaly Iñiguez ;Tomás Prado; Nicolás Olavarría
Abstract
Purpose
The present study aims to translate, adapt and validate a Spanish version of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, Joint Replacement (KOOS, JR), including a reliability and validity analysis in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).
Methods
This study conducted a prospective validation study following the six stages of the “Guidelines for the Process of Cross‐Cultural Adaptation of Self‐Report Measures”. Psychometric testing was conducted in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Subjects answered the Spanish KOOS, JR (S‐KOOS, JR) and a validated Spanish Oxford Knee Score (S‐OKS). Retest was conducted at 10 days. Acceptability, floor and ceiling effect, internal consistency (Cronbach’s α), reproducibility (mixed‐effect model coefficient [MEMC]) and construct validity (Spearman’s correlation; p = 0.05) were assessed.
Results
Forty‐one patients (mean age: 65.6 ± 5.39; 48.8% female) participated in the study. All patients (100%) answered both scores during the first assessment and 38 (92.7%) during the second assessment. All patient‐reported outcomes measures were answered completely (100%). The S‐KOOS, JR resulted in 100% acceptability when answered. There were no ceiling or floor effects detected. The Cronbach’s α for the S‐KOOS, JR was 0.927 and its MEMC was 0.852 (CI 95% 0.636–1.078). The Spearman’s correlation between the S‐KOOS, JR and the S‐OKS was 0.711 (CI 0.345–0.608; p < 0.001) and 0.870 (CI 0.444–0.651; p < 0.001) for the first and second assessments, respectively.
Conclusion
The S‐KOOS, JR has very high internal consistency and reproducibility, with a high correlation with the S‐OKS; it is a reliable and valid instrument for characterising Spanish‐speaking patients suffering from knee OA.
Level of evidence
IV.
Scopus© Citations 1 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Assessing diabetic polyneuropathy in Spanish‐speaking patients: Translation and validation of the Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score(2023); ;Ignacio Acosta ;Alberto Prat ;Francesca GattiniFrancisca Pino
Abstract
Background and Aims
Diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSP) is a common complication of diabetes. The Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score (TCNS) is a useful tool for detecting DSP. However, it is not available in Spanish. The study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the TCNS and modified (mTCNS) scales into Spanish and evaluate their measurement properties.
Methods
A multistep forward‐backward method was used for translation and cultural adaptation. A panel of physicians subjected the final Spanish versions of TCNS and mTCNS (TCÑS, mTCÑS) to cognitive debriefing. Consecutive patients with diabetes mellitus and DSP were recruited from an outpatient clinic, and the TCÑS and mTCÑS were tested for construct validity, along with other measures.
Results
The internal consistency of both TCÑS and mTCÑS was excellent, as evidenced by Cronbach's Alpha coefficients of 0.83 and 0.85, respectively. Furthermore, there was a robust positive correlation between TCÑS and mTCÑS. In addition, TCÑS was found to exhibit a strong negative correlation with sural sensory nerve action potential amplitude (r = −0.9206) and peroneal compound motor action potential amplitude (r = −0.729), while demonstrating a positive and strong correlation with the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (r = 0.713).
Interpretation
The TCÑS and mTCÑS are reliable and valid translations of the original TCNS. The TCÑS and mTCÑS can be used to diagnose and measure the severity of neuropathy in Spanish‐speaking patients with diabetes.
9Scopus© Citations 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
