    Empatía y conducta prosocial
    (Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo, 2025-03-01) ;
    Maria del Carmen Tejada
    En el ámbito de la neurociencia social contemporánea, la percepción de la naturaleza humana abarca un amplio espectro que va desde el egoísmo hasta la bondad innata. Desde esta perspectiva, se introduce la exploración de la conducta prosocial, la cual se fundamenta en la comprensión de cómo los individuos pueden manifestar comportamientos altruistas o colaborativos a lo largo de un continuo que oscila entre la búsqueda de beneficios propios y el deseo innato de ayudar a los demás. La interrelación entre la conducta prosocial y la empatía se convierte en un punto clave de estudio, ya que ambas dimensiones están intrínsecamente conectadas en la forma en que los individuos interactúan y se relacionan en sociedad. Comprender cómo estas dos facetas se entrelazan permite apreciar mejor la complejidad de la naturaleza humana y su influencia en la dinámica social.

    Objective. To determine if resilience can predict empathy. Specifically, explain what would be the effect of the resilience dimensions on the dimensions of empathy in the nursing students examined in this study. Methods. Cross-sectional study with the participation of 340 nursing students from a private university in Colombia. Jefferson’s Empathy Scale (student version) and the Resilience-Trait Scale were used. The complete psychometry of the Empathy and Resilience scales was carried out, followed by the application of Structural Equations. Results. Ecological Resilience predicts negatively the dimensions of “Compassionate Care” (β = -0.11) and “Walking in the patient’s shoes” (β = -0.19); the Engineering Resilience predicts positively the dimension “Walking in the patient’s shoes” (β = 0.08). Conclusion. Overall, resilience predicts empathy, thereby, introducing empathetic training of nursing students in the population studied must also include training in resilience.

    Introducción: Determinar si las dimensiones de la resiliencia son capaces de predecir las dimensiones de la empatía a partir de las puntuaciones de resiliencia individual en una muestra de estudiantes de ciencias de la salud. Métodos: La muestra estuvo compuesta por 1093 estudiantes de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de El Salvador. Se calcularon estadísticas descriptivas para caracterizar la muestra y se estimó la predicción de las dimensiones de resiliencia sobre las de empatía mediante ecuaciones estructurales. Resultados: Se encontró que las dimensiones de resiliencia ingenieril y adaptativa predicen negativamente las dimensiones de empatía de adopción de perspectiva y cuidado compasivo, mientras que la dimensión ecológica predijo positivamente las dimensiones de empatía de adopción de perspectiva y cuidado compasivo. Conclusión: La resiliencia individual es una variable que puede influir en la empatía y predecir el comportamiento empático en estudiantes de diferentes carreras o programas de estudio pertenecientes a una Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud. Estos hallazgos proporcionan evidencia empírica que respalda el concepto de que la empatía puede definirse como una variable dependiente de la resiliencia individual. Es necesario incorporar la formación en resiliencia y empatía de forma coordinada en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de los estudiantes de ciencias de la salud.

Introduction: Empathy is an attribute that contributes to humane care of patients and increases the likelihood of successful treatment. Objectives: To measure the levels of empathy and its dimensions, and diagnose empathic behavior in medicine and nursing students. Materials and Methods: This was a non-experimental, cross-sectional study in which Colombian nursing and medicine students were evaluated using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE). A factor analysis, an analysis of invariance, and a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used, and the data were compared to specific cut-off points for each program. Effect size and power of the tests were estimated for the comparisons performed. Results: The theoretical model for the construct ‘empathy’ fitted the observed data, and the invariance of the model between groups was confirmed. Differences were observed between nursing and medical students, as well as between sexes, with results favoring the women group. Discussion: The differences found between students could be partly due to the curricular differences of the programs and the students' interests, whereas those related to sex may be due to characteristics observed in Latin American population. The identified empathy deficiencies allowed for the development of a diagnosis for nursing and medicine students. Conclusion: Based on the findings, it is possible to diagnose the empathy levels of students of both programs by identifying the deficiencies observed in the dimensions of empathy.

Background: Empathy is an attribute that plays an essential role in the dentist–patient therapeutic relationship, clinical care, and treatment adherence, along with providing other benefits. The main objective of this research was to establish the validity, reliability, and invariance of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy and then characterize the empathy levels of students and teachers at a dental school. Materials and Methods: An observational and cross-sectional study analyzed a sample of undergraduate students and professors from the Universidad Andrés Bello Faculty of Dentistry (Chile) (n = 1727 and n = 267, respectively). The Empathy Scale for Health Professionals (HP) and the same scale for students (HPS) were applied. Results: The Jefferson Empathy Scale presents adequate psychometric properties. The empathy measure has adequate reliability and construct validity, confirming a fit of the three-factor empathy model to the data. The measurement is invariant within the university campus, the sex of the student, and between teacher and student. Teachers present greater empathy than students except in the Perspective Adoption dimension. Conclusions: The Jefferson Empathy Scale is reliable, valid, and invariant among Chilean dental students and professors. Students do not differ from their professors in the cognitive component of empathy, but they present a lower score in the affective component and global empathy. It is inferred that students can develop the affective component of empathy in their interactions with their professors, increasing their overall empathy. Understanding and fostering empathy in dental students and professors can significantly improve patient care and treatment adherence and increase patient and dentist satisfaction.

    Decision-making is a process that can be strongly affected by social factors. Evidence has shown how people deviate from traditional rational-choice predictions under different levels of social interactions. The emergence of prosocial decision-making, defined as any action that is addressed to benefit another individual even at the expense of personal benefits, has been reported as an example of such social influence. Furthermore, brain evidence has shown the involvement of structures such as the prefrontal cortex, anterior insula, and midcingulate cortex during decision settings in which a decision maker interacts with others under physical pain or distress or while being observed by others.
Methods
Using a slightly modified version of the dictator game and EEG recordings, we tested the hypothesis that the inclusion of another person into the decision setting increases prosocial decisions in young adults and that this increase is higher when the other person is associated with others in need. At the brain level, we hypothesized that the increase in prosocial decisions correlates with frontal theta activity.
Results and Discussion
The results showed that including another person in the decision, setting increased prosocial behavior only when this presence was associated with someone in need. This effect was associated with an increase in frontocentral theta-oscillatory activity. These results suggest that the presence of someone in need enhances empathy concerns and norm compliance, raising the participants’ prosocial decision-making.
