    Feedback as an opportunity to promote lifelong learning in pre-service teachers: a mixed methods study

    <jats:p>The aim of this study was to investigate whether, within a practice-based curriculum, feedback on the assessment tasks provided during campus coursework offers opportunities to promote lifelong learning dispositions in pre-service teachers. For this, pre-service teachers (<jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 231) completed a validated questionnaire regarding lifelong learning dispositions. Then, feedback from assessment tasks (<jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 14) was analyzed to identify claims related to curiosity, motivation, perseverance, and self-regulation of learning. Finally, in-depth interviews were conducted with pre-service teachers (<jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 8) to explore their perspectives on feedback and lifelong learning dispositions. Data triangulation was used to confirm and add depth to the findings. Feedback on assessment tasks provided during campus course work promotes lifelong learning dispositions when: (i) tied to authentic tasks, (ii) is provide not only by teacher educators but also by peers, (iii) incorporates both positive and negative comments, along with practical advice. The implication of findings for teacher education is discussed.</jats:p>

    Human Anterior Insula Encodes Performance Feedback and Relays Prediction Error to the Medial Prefrontal Cortex

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Adaptive behavior requires the comparison of outcome predictions with actual outcomes (e.g., performance feedback). This process of performance monitoring is computed by a distributed brain network comprising the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the anterior insular cortex (AIC). Despite being consistently co-activated during different tasks, the precise neuronal computations of each region and their interactions remain elusive. In order to assess the neural mechanism by which the AIC processes performance feedback, we recorded AIC electrophysiological activity in humans. We found that the AIC beta oscillations amplitude is modulated by the probability of performance feedback valence (positive or negative) given the context (task and condition difficulty). Furthermore, the valence of feedback was encoded by delta waves phase-modulating the power of beta oscillations. Finally, connectivity and causal analysis showed that beta oscillations relay feedback information signals to the mPFC. These results reveal that structured oscillatory activity in the anterior insula encodes performance feedback information, thus coordinating brain circuits related to reward-based learning.</jats:p>

    Tipos y formas de retroalimentación en informes de laboratorio en ingeniería eléctrica: aproximación a la producción de un género de formación

    <jats:p>La escritura de informes de laboratorio es una práctica evaluativa habitual de los estudiantes de ingeniería, pues permite a los estudiantes desarrollar habilidades de pensamiento empírico, y de este modo, relacionar conceptos con operaciones racionales sistemáticas con el fin de describir y explicar el fenómeno en estudio. Tal como sucede con otros géneros escritos en esta disciplina los estudiantes presentan diversas dificultades en el proceso de representar por escrito la experiencia observada, lo que se manifiesta en el uso de las normas lingüísticas, la adecuación al estilo académico y al género discursivo. Dado lo anterior, la retroalimentación que entregan los evaluadores se convierte en una parte fundamental para que los estudiantes puedan corregir sus falencias y mejorar su nivel de escritura académica. El objetivo general de este artículo es caracterizar los distintos tipos de retroalimentaciones en los informes de laboratorio de mediciones de los estudiantes de Ingeniería Eléctrica de la PUCV. Para ello, se analizaron los comentarios que entregan los evaluadores presentes en 50 informes de laboratorio a partir de tres tipologías de retroalimentación, a saber, las propuestas por Contreras y Zúñiga (2017), Canabal y Margalef (2017), y Guasch, Espasa, Álvarez y Kirschner (2013). Para su categorización, se utilizó el software QSR Nvivo pro 12. Entre los hallazgos se observa variedad de tipos de retroalimentaciones, siendo la correctiva las más frecuente. Esta es usada para comentar aciertos y errores, focalizándose en el contenido, la tarea o el proceso de la tarea. Además, emergen tres nuevos tipos de retroalimentaciones: elogio+mejoría proyectiva, correctiva+sugestiva y correctiva+epistémica. Finalmente, se observa una disminución no lineal en el tiempo de las retroalimentaciones, ello supondría un umbral de mejora en el proceso escritural.</jats:p>
