Objective. To determine if resilience can predict empathy. Specifically, explain what would be the effect of the resilience dimensions on the dimensions of empathy in the nursing students examined in this study. Methods. Cross-sectional study with the participation of 340 nursing students from a private university in Colombia. Jefferson’s Empathy Scale (student version) and the Resilience-Trait Scale were used. The complete psychometry of the Empathy and Resilience scales was carried out, followed by the application of Structural Equations. Results. Ecological Resilience predicts negatively the dimensions of “Compassionate Care” (β = -0.11) and “Walking in the patient’s shoes” (β = -0.19); the Engineering Resilience predicts positively the dimension “Walking in the patient’s shoes” (β = 0.08). Conclusion. Overall, resilience predicts empathy, thereby, introducing empathetic training of nursing students in the population studied must also include training in resilience.

Introduction: Empathy is an attribute that contributes to humane care of patients and increases the likelihood of successful treatment. Objectives: To measure the levels of empathy and its dimensions, and diagnose empathic behavior in medicine and nursing students. Materials and Methods: This was a non-experimental, cross-sectional study in which Colombian nursing and medicine students were evaluated using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE). A factor analysis, an analysis of invariance, and a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used, and the data were compared to specific cut-off points for each program. Effect size and power of the tests were estimated for the comparisons performed. Results: The theoretical model for the construct ‘empathy’ fitted the observed data, and the invariance of the model between groups was confirmed. Differences were observed between nursing and medical students, as well as between sexes, with results favoring the women group. Discussion: The differences found between students could be partly due to the curricular differences of the programs and the students' interests, whereas those related to sex may be due to characteristics observed in Latin American population. The identified empathy deficiencies allowed for the development of a diagnosis for nursing and medicine students. Conclusion: Based on the findings, it is possible to diagnose the empathy levels of students of both programs by identifying the deficiencies observed in the dimensions of empathy.

Depression is considered a factor that interferes with HIV prevention. Depression may reach 41% among low‐income Chilean women. Depressed people are less willing to participate in behaviours that protect them against HIV. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of Mano a Mano‐Mujer (MM‐M), and HIV prevention intervention, on depressive symptoms among Chilean women. A quasi‐experimental design was used for this study. The research was conducted in Santiago, Chile; a total of 400 women participated in the study (intervention group, n = 182; control group, n = 218). The intervention was guided by the social‐cognitive model and the primary health care model. The intervention consists of six 2‐h sessions delivered in small groups. Sessions covered: HIV prevention, depression, partner's communication, and substance abuse. Face‐to‐face interviews were conducted at baseline and at 3‐month follow‐up. Chilean women who participated in MM‐M significantly decreased, at 3 months follow up, their reported depressive symptoms. MM‐M provided significant benefits for women's depression symptoms. In this study nurses participated as leaders for the screening of depressive symptoms and as facilitators of community interventions.

Several institutions and countries have recognized the need to integrate disruptive technologies in the training of health professionals. An elective course on disruptive technologies in health for nursing was developed, structured in 5 units: a) innovation in health and nursing, b) creation of apps and virtual environments, c) digital manufacturing for nursing, d) sensors and internet of things, and e) data science in health. For its implementation, the didactic model proposed by Jorba and Sanmartí was considered; and for the evaluation of the units and the impact of the course, Urquidi's extended model of technological adoption was used. Forty-four students participated (39 women and 5 men), with an average age of 23 years. According to the technology acceptance model, statistically significant differences were found between the pre- and post-intervention groups in all dimensions of the model (Wilcoxon test, p < 0.05). In addition, a positive correlation was found between ease of use, subjective norm and intention to use the technologies taught. The implementation of the disruptive technologies course proved to be effective in the development of technological skills among nursing students in Chile.
