Item type:Publication, Activities of daily living and their neural correlates across the Alzheimer's disease continuum: Evidence from a Latin American cohort(Wiley, 2026-04-29) ;Patricio Riquelme ;Gonzalo Forno ;Joaquín Migeot ;Rodrigo HenríquezPatricia Lillo<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:sec> <jats:title>INTRODUCTION</jats:title> <jats:p>Functional decline in activities of daily living (ADL)—advanced (AADL), instrumental (IADL), and basic (BADL)—is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, integrated clinical–neuroanatomical evidence on progression across the AD continuum remains limited, particularly in Latin American populations.</jats:p> </jats:sec> <jats:sec> <jats:title>METHODS</jats:title> <jats:p>We studied 138 older adults with subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD). ADL domains were assessed using the Technology‐Activities of Daily Living Questionnaire. Structural magnetic resonance imaging data were analyzed using voxel‐based morphometry (VBM) to identify gray matter (GM) correlates of ADL performance.</jats:p> </jats:sec> <jats:sec> <jats:title>RESULTS</jats:title> <jats:p>A hierarchical decline from AADL to IADL to BADL differentiated clinical stages. SCC and MCI differed mainly in AADL performance, whereas ADD showed decline across all domains. Item type:Publication, Functional Capacity in Activities of Daily Living in the Alzheimer’s Disease Continuum(Wiley, 2024-12); ;Carmen Dominguez ;Fabrissio Grandi ;Cecilia Gonzalez CampoPatricio Riquelme ContrerasThe most common and prevalent dementia worldwide is Alzheimer’s disease (AD). AD is a continuum composed of Subjective Cognitive Impairment (SCD), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer’s Disease dementia (ADD) stage. One of the main clinical variables in patients with dementia is performance in functional capacity since its alterations are associated with poor prognosis and disease progression. Functional capacity is measured through activities of daily living (ADL), which are divided into three domains: i) Basic (BADL), ii) Instrumental (IADL), and iii) Advanced (AADL). The study aimed to characterize the performance of the different stages of the AD continuum in the ADL domains and their association with cognitive abilities.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Method</jats:title><jats:p>A cross‐sectional study of subjects at different stages of the AD continuum was conducted: Healthy Controls (CTR) (n = 17), SCD (n = 77), MCI (n = 30), and ADD (n = 23), who were matched for age, sex, and education. ADLs were estimated using The Technology‐Activities of Daily Living Questionnaire (T‐ADLQ), which assesses the three domains and a total score. T‐ADLQ performance was compared across groups and correlated with cognitive ability instruments (ACE‐III and IFS).</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Result</jats:title><jats:p>The results showed that patients with ADD performed worse on the BADL, IADL, and total ADLs compared to the other three groups. There were no significant differences between the CTR, SCD, and MCI on the BADL, IADL, and total ADLs. However, the AADL, in addition to differentiating the ADD patients from the other three groups, also showed differences between CTR and MCI subjects and between SCD and MCI subjects (Table 1 and Figure 1). The correlation study showed that AADL correlated significantly with global cognitive and executive function assessment (Figure 2).</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusion</jats:title><jats:p>AADL shows progressive functional impairment at different stages of the AD continuum, which is further associated with global cognitive and executive function performances. As one progresses to a more advanced stage of the disease continuum, the performance of ADLs, especially AADLs, worsens, which could indicate a marker of disease progression, allowing for better patient follow‐up.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, A multimodal interface for speech perception: the role of the left superior temporal sulcus in social cognition and autism(2024) ;Leonie Kausel ;Maëva Michon; Francisco Aboitiz<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Multimodal integration is crucial for human interaction, in particular for social communication, which relies on integrating information from various sensory modalities. Recently a third visual pathway specialized in social perception was proposed, which includes the right superior temporal sulcus (STS) playing a key role in processing socially relevant cues and high-level social perception. Importantly, it has also recently been proposed that the left STS contributes to audiovisual integration of speech processing. In this article, we propose that brain areas along the right STS that support multimodal integration for social perception and cognition can be considered homologs to those in the left, language-dominant hemisphere, sustaining multimodal integration of speech and semantic concepts fundamental for social communication. Emphasizing the significance of the left STS in multimodal integration and associated processes such as multimodal attention to socially relevant stimuli, we underscore its potential relevance in comprehending neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by challenges in social communication such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Further research into this left lateral processing stream holds the promise of enhancing our understanding of social communication in both typical development and ASD, which may lead to more effective interventions that could improve the quality of life for individuals with atypical neurodevelopment.</jats:p>Scopus© Citations 8 5 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Multimodal imitative learning and synchrony in cetaceans: A model for speech and singing evolution(2023) ;José Zamorano-Abramson ;Maëva Michon ;Ma Victoria Hernández-LloredaFrancisco Aboitiz<jats:p>Multimodal imitation of actions, gestures and vocal production is a hallmark of the evolution of human communication, as both, vocal learning and visual-gestural imitation, were crucial factors that facilitated the evolution of speech and singing. Comparative evidence has revealed that humans are an odd case in this respect, as the case for multimodal imitation is barely documented in non-human animals. While there is evidence of vocal learning in birds and in mammals like bats, elephants and marine mammals, evidence in both domains, vocal and gestural, exists for two Psittacine birds (budgerigars and grey parrots) and cetaceans only. Moreover, it draws attention to the apparent absence of vocal imitation (with just a few cases reported for vocal fold control in an orangutan and a gorilla and a prolonged development of vocal plasticity in marmosets) and even for imitation of intransitive actions (not object related) in monkeys and apes in the wild. Even after training, the evidence for productive or “true imitation” (copy of a novel behavior, i.e., not pre-existent in the observer’s behavioral repertoire) in both domains is scarce. Here we review the evidence of multimodal imitation in cetaceans, one of the few living mammalian species that have been reported to display multimodal imitative learning besides humans, and their role in sociality, communication and group cultures. We propose that cetacean multimodal imitation was acquired in parallel with the evolution and development of behavioral synchrony and multimodal organization of sensorimotor information, supporting volitional motor control of their vocal system and audio-echoic-visual voices, body posture and movement integration.</jats:p>Scopus© Citations 6 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
