    Electromobility in Forest Transport. Is It Feasible? Perceptions Regarding Implementation in the Chilean Industry

    This paper examines the different impressions and perspectives related to the implementation of electromobility in log transportation via trucks with a load capacity of up to 45 tons in the forestry sector of the eighth and sixteenth regions of Chile. The objective of this work is to establish the critical variables identified and perceived by key stakeholders of the forestry industry the correct implementation of high tonnage electric trucks. To this effect, a qualitative methodological study with a non-experimental design is proposed, which is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with stakeholders of the forestry sector of the study area. A convenience sample is employed, which was applied to four businessmen in the sector, three executives from the main forestry companies, and two truck distributor representatives. The data show that there is currently little knowledge due to the lack of specific projects and platforms for disseminating information that consider this technology in the field, but, on the contrary, they show a willingness to implement pilot plans aiming for the perceived economic sustainability of electromobility. A concentration of critical aspects is evidenced, which must be addressed in order to implement electromobility in forest transport, and which, given handling by public-private work, would enable the sector and the country to obtain the economic and environmental benefits of this technology.

    Digital Transformation: Opportunity or Threat to Employability?

    This paper presents a critical analysis of the Digital Transformation’s (DT) effects on employability within organizations in Chile, providing an action reference framework for competitiveness in the field. To achieve this, a qualitative approach to the opinions of a convenience sample of executives and leaders was employed, based on semi-structured interviews, to understand how to address this type of transformation. The analysis indicates that, having long-term policies for the development of new skills in their collaborators is a critical success factor. These policies are summarized in three stages, through a reference framework for the generation of specific actions in pursuit of the development of a successful DT process. DT fosters a cultural change in the entities to generate capacities that allow them to anticipate the evolution of the market and adapt quickly to it, for which it is fundamental to promote the training of new technical and behavioral skills in collaborators, in addition to encouraging them to self-train.

    <jats:p>Las Simulaciones de Equilibrio Líquido Vapor (VLE) son ampliamente utilizadas dado su impacto en el escalamiento, diseño y extrapolación de diferentes operaciones unitarias. Sin embargo, dado considerable factores, es casi imposible experimentalmente estudiar cada uno de los sistemas de VLE. La simulación de VLE puede ser desarrollada utilizando representaciones que son fuertemente dependientes de la naturaleza e interacción de los compuestos que conforman la mezcla. Un modelo que ayude en la predicción de esas interacciones facilitará el proceso de simulación. Una Red Neuronal Gris (GNM) fue creada como un predictor de parámetros de interacción binaria, los que son estimados utilizando variables de estado e información de componentes puros. Esta información fue utilizada para predecir el comportamiento de VLE en mezclas y rangos no utilizados en la formulación matemática. Las capacidades predictivas del GNM (incluida la dependencia de temperatura) mostraron errores menores al 5% y al 20% para mezclas consideradas y no consideradas en los datos de entrenamiento, respectivamente.</jats:p>

    Risk Management Model for Tailings Storage Facilities in Chile: An Approach from Geological and Mining Engineering and the Regulatory Framework
    <jats:p>Despite technological advancements in mining, Chile lacks comprehensive risk management models for tailings storage facilities (TSFs), which hinders the prevention and mitigation of structural and environmental risks. This study aims to develop an integrated risk management model for TSFs in Chile, combining geological and mining engineering with an updated regulatory framework to enhance safety and reduce environmental impacts. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach. Qualitatively, it draws on 10 semi-structured interviews with engineers, geologists, academics, and professionals from the Chilean mining industry, selected through purposive sampling, to explore how and why the current risk management model should be improved. Quantitatively, it analyzes data from 303 surveys assessing the existing regulatory framework, a proposed new regulatory decree for Chile, and key variables to be considered in TSF risk management. The results present a new model that integrates geochemical and geotechnical characterization, process variables, in situ sensors, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence to generate dynamic risk indicators and early warning systems throughout the life cycle of the facility, including closure and liability valuation. Its multiscale design, adaptable to seismic and hydrogeological conditions and suitable for small- and medium-scale mining, overcomes existing static and fragmented approaches, enabling more effective decision-making with a focus on environmental and community safety. The study concludes that the model provides a robust and coherent tool for TSF risk management by integrating technical expertise, the current regulatory framework, and the management of key variables that enhance the ability to anticipate and mitigate structural and environmental risks.</jats:p>

    A Systematic Literature Review on the Use of Clays for Arsenic Removal

    Arsenic contamination in water remains a critical global challenge, particularly in rural and resource-limited regions. Clays have been widely studied as cost-effective and efficient adsorbents for arsenic removal. This systematic review provides a comprehensive analysis of the application of clays in arsenic adsorption, focusing on clay types, operational units, and study methodologies. The review classifies the adsorption mechanisms, highlights key factors influencing adsorption performance—such as pH, ionic strength, and surface modifications—and examines the effectiveness of various modifications. Furthermore, the study categorizes adsorption research into kinetic, iso-thermal, thermodynamic, and efficiency studies, providing insights into the state of the art and the experimental conditions that govern arsenic removal. It also discusses the scalability and practical application of clay-based adsorption technologies, emphasizing gaps in field validation, regeneration studies, and large-scale implementation. The findings highlight the potential of natural and modified clays in arsenic remediation, while underscoring the need for further research to optimize adsorption conditions and enhance sustainability in water treatment systems.

    Blockchain in Supermarkets: Mitigating the Problem of Organic Waste Generation

    This work presents a proposal for a solution to the specific problem of organic waste generated by supermarkets and understood as t merchandise of organic and perishable composition that could not be marketed during its validity period. The goal of this research is to propose a solution based on Blockchain technology in Chile, which would allow an immutable, decentralized, and validated transaction record to be kept. Such a record would enable supermarkets to trace the life cycle of those products that make up organic and perishable merchandise in a transparent, reliable, and scalable way. To this end, the problem is modeled using the Blockchain Hyperledger Fabric platform (an open-source platform started by the Linux Foundation), which is fed with relevant information and data on the status of a representative set of organic merchandise products. At the same time, a qualitative approach is proposed to gather the opinions of executives and logistics operators through semi-structured interviews, and considering a convenience sample. With a sample of 6 executives, it is understood how the proposal is perceived and its applicability in supermarkets and distributors. The data show that both obtaining information and making decisions about it are achieved in a distributed and collaborative way, allowing for reliable and agile traceability, thereby mitigating the low quality of the information provided by the actors that make up the supply chain. This service is perceived as desirable by both customers and operators.  The model enables not only horizontal communications between suppliers, distributors, and consumers, but also vertical ones, and thus, ultimately, makes the company's income statement more efficient.
