Item type:Publication, Exploring the feasibility and effectiveness of a naturalistic family centered intervention to enhance early interactions in toddlers with Down syndrome(Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2025-04-09) ;Ana Mendoza-García ;Andrés Aparicio ;Paulina Sofía ArangoThis study analyses the feasibility and effectiveness of BabyMICARE, a manualised intervention programme aimed at improving the interactions between caregivers and infants and toddlers with Down syndrome. The programme’s goal is to enhance caregivers’ sensitivity and reduce directivity during early interactions, particularly during play and daily routines. A pre-test and post-test design was used with 40 dyads of infants with Down syndrome and their caregivers, who were divided into a control group (n = 20) and an intervention group (n = 20), based on baseline scores in key interaction subscales. Sessions were conducted over 10 weeks by trained psychologists. Parent-infant interaction was assessed using the MACI coding system, which measures aspects such as sensitive responsiveness, directivity and the level of reciprocity between the parent and the child. The programme showed high feasibility, with a 100% attendance rate but some rescheduling. Caregivers evaluated it positively. The intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in five of eight MACI scales, particularly in sensitive responsiveness and nondirectiveness, while no changes were observed in the control group. The results suggest that BabyMICARE is a feasible and effective intervention for promoting more responsive, less directive interactions, which may be crucial in fostering children’s development.3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Usability and feasibility of PreventS-MD web app for stroke prevention(2023) ;Valery L Feigin ;Rita Krishnamurthi ;Oleg Medvedev ;Alexander MerkinBalakrishnan Nair<jats:sec><jats:title>Background:</jats:title><jats:p> Most strokes and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are potentially preventable if their risk factors are identified and well controlled. Digital platforms, such as the PreventS-MD web app (PreventS-MD) may aid health care professionals (HCPs) in assessing and managing risk factors and promoting lifestyle changes for their patients. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods:</jats:title><jats:p> This is a mixed-methods cross-sectional two-phase survey using a largely positivist (quantitative and qualitative) framework. During Phase 1, a prototype of PreventS-MD was tested internationally by 59 of 69 consenting HCPs of different backgrounds, age, sex, working experience, and specialties using hypothetical data. Collected comments/suggestions from the study HCPs in Phase 1 were reviewed and implemented. In Phase 2, a near-final version of PreventS-MD was developed and tested by 58 of 72 consenting HCPs using both hypothetical and real patient (n = 10) data. Qualitative semi-structured interviews with real patients (n = 10) were conducted, and 1 month adherence to the preventive recommendations was assessed by self-reporting. The four System Usability Scale (SUS) groups of scores (0–50 unacceptable; 51–68 poor; 68–80.3 good; >80.3 excellent) were used to determine usability of PreventS-MD. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Findings:</jats:title><jats:p> Ninety-nine HCPs from 27 countries (45% from low- to middle-income countries) participated in the study, and out of them, 10 HCPs were involved in the development of PreventS before the study, and therefore were not involved in the survey. Of the remaining 89 HCPs, 69 consented to the first phase of the survey, and 59 of them completed the first phase of the survey (response rate 86%), and 58 completed the second phase of the survey (response rate 84%). The SUS scores supported good usability of the prototype (mean score = 80.2; 95% CI [77.0–84.0]) and excellent usability of the final version of PreventS-MD (mean score = 81.7; 95% CI [79.1–84.3]) in the field. Scores were not affected by the age, sex, working experience, or specialty of the HCPs. One-month follow-up of the patients confirmed the high level of satisfaction/acceptability of PreventS-MD and (100%) adherence to the recommendations. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Interpretation:</jats:title><jats:p> The PreventS-MD web app has a high level of usability, feasibility, and satisfaction by HCPs and individuals at risk of stroke/CVD. Item type:Publication, A complex intervention to support breastfeeding: A feasibility and acceptability study(2023) ;Camila Lucchini‐Raies ;Francisca Marquez‐Doren; ;Solange CamposPaulina Beca<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:sec><jats:title>Aims</jats:title><jats:p>The aims of this study are to assess the acceptability and feasibility of a multicomponent intervention to support breastfeeding women and their families and explore its effectiveness.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods</jats:title><jats:p>A pilot study with control and intervention groups was conducted using the complex intervention framework in two primary healthcare centres. Overall, 44 childbearing women, their partners/relatives and 20 healthcare professionals participated in the study. The intervention's feasibility and acceptability were measured. The percentage of exclusive breastfeeding rates and women's self‐efficacy were measured at pre‐intervention, at 10 days postpartum, and again at 2, 4 and 6 months postpartum. Postpartum depression risk was measured at 2 and 6 months postpartum. Professional self‐efficacy was measured at pre‐intervention and 3 months later.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results</jats:title><jats:p>The intervention was feasible and acceptable. No difference in self‐efficacy existed between the intervention and control groups. Preliminary effects of the intervention were found in exclusive breastfeeding percentage and postpartum depression risk in the intervention group.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusion</jats:title><jats:p>The intervention is feasible and acceptable. Item type:Publication, Local pulmonary drug delivery in the preterm rabbit: feasibility and efficacy of daily intratracheal injections(2019) ;Thomas Salaets ;André Gie; ;Margo AertgeertsOlivier Gheysens<jats:p> Recent clinical trials in newborns have successfully used surfactant as a drug carrier for an active compound, to minimize systemic exposure. To investigate the translational potential of surfactant-compound mixtures and other local therapeutics, a relevant animal model is required in which intratracheal administration for maximal local deposition is technically possible and well tolerated. Preterm rabbit pups (born at 28 days of gestation) were exposed to either hyperoxia or normoxia and randomized to receive daily intratracheal surfactant, daily intratracheal saline, or no injections for 7 days. At day 7, the overall lung function and morphology were assessed. Efficacy in terms of distribution was assessed by micro-PET-CT on both day 0 and day 7. Lung function as well as parenchymal and vascular structure were altered by hyperoxia, thereby reproducing a phenotype reminiscent of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Neither intratracheal surfactant nor saline affected the survival or the hyperoxia-induced BPD phenotype of the pups. Using PET-CT, we demonstrate that 82.5% of the injected radioactive tracer goes and remains in the lungs, with a decrease of only 4% after 150 min. Surfactant and saline can safely and effectively be administered in spontaneously breathing preterm rabbits. CrothersOllivier Hyrien<jats:p>Reverse transcription–quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is used worldwide to test and trace the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). “Extraction-less” or “direct” real time–reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is a transparent and accessible qualitative method for SARS-CoV-2 detection from nasopharyngeal or oral pharyngeal samples with the potential to generate actionable data more quickly, at a lower cost, and with fewer experimental resources than full RT-qPCR. This study engaged 10 global testing sites, including laboratories currently experiencing testing limitations due to reagent or equipment shortages, in an international interlaboratory ring trial. Participating laboratories were provided a common protocol, common reagents, aliquots of identical pooled clinical samples, and purified nucleic acids and used their existing in-house equipment. We observed 100% concordance across laboratories in the correct identification of all positive and negative samples, with highly similar cycle threshold values. The test also performed well when applied to locally collected patient nasopharyngeal samples, provided the viral transport media did not contain charcoal or guanidine, both of which appeared to potently inhibit the RT-PCR reaction. Our results suggest that direct RT-PCR assay methods can be clearly translated across sites utilizing readily available equipment and expertise and are thus a feasible option for more efficient COVID-19 coronavirus disease testing as demanded by the continuing pandemic.</jats:p>Scopus© Citations 2 3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Online intervention to prevent postnatal depression and anxiety in Chilean new mothers: Protocol for a feasibility trial(2022); ; ;Marcia Olhaberry ;Olga FernándezMaría I García<jats:p> Symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety in new mothers are prevalent and negatively impact maternal emotional wellbeing and infant development. Barriers to accessing treatment prevent women from receiving mental health care, a situation that has worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. mHealth interventions hold the potential to support women during the transition to parenthood despite these barriers and to promote the use of preventive interventions. This study uses a mixed methods design to assess the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a psychoeducational, guided mHealth intervention to prevent postpartum mental health difficulties in women who receive care in primary health centers in Chile. The study will contribute to evidence-based research on the effectiveness of mHealth interventions for new mothers from an understudied cultural background. The findings will also enable the development of a larger randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of the intervention, which, if effective, could significantly contribute to the emotional wellbeing of women and their families. </jats:p>16 1Scopus© Citations 4 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

JardimMariano Fernandez Acquier<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:sec> <jats:title>Introduction</jats:title> <jats:p>Currently, strategies for improving alpha1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) diagnosis are needed. Here we report the performance of a multinational multiplex-based genotyping test on dried blood spots and buccal swabs sent by post or courier and with web registration for subjects with suspected AATD in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, and Turkey. </jats:p> </jats:sec><jats:sec> <jats:title>Methods</jats:title> <jats:p>This was an observational, cross-sectional analysis of samples from patients with suspected AATD from March 2018 to January 2022. Samples were coded on a web platform and sent by post or courier to the central laboratory in Northern Spain. Allele-specific genotyping for the 14 most common mutations was carried out with the A1AT Genotyping Test (Progenika-Grifols, Spain). SERPINA1 gene sequencing was performed if none of the mutations were found or one variant was detected in heterozygous status and the AAT serum level was < 60 mg/dl, or if requested by the clinician in charge.</jats:p> </jats:sec><jats:sec> <jats:title>Results</jats:title> <jats:p>The study included 30,827 samples: 30,458 (94.7%) with final results after direct genotyping and 369 (1.1%) with additional gene sequencing. Only 0.3% of the samples were not processed due to their poor quality. The prevalence of the most frequent allele combinations was MS 14.7%, MZ 8.6%, SS 1.9%, SZ 1.9%, and ZZ 0.9%. Additionally, 70 cases with new mutations were identified. Family screening was conducted in 2.5% of the samples. Samples from patients with respiratory diseases other than COPD, including poorly controlled asthma or bronchiectasis, also presented AATD mutations.</jats:p> </jats:sec><jats:sec> <jats:title>Conclusions</jats:title> <jats:p>Our results confirm the viability of this diagnostic system for genotyping AATD conducted simultaneously in different countries.
