    Navigating Through Innovation in Elderly’s Health: A Scoping Review of Digital Health Interventions

    <jats:sec><jats:title>Objectives</jats:title><jats:p>Comprehensively map and summarize digital health initiatives for the elderly and caregivers.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods</jats:title><jats:p>Scoping review between April and May 2022 based on Joanna Briggs methodology. Databases used included PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL Plus, and Web of Science, along with grey literature and hand searches. Two reviewers independently conducted screening and eligibility phases, with a third resolving disagreements. Data were thematically analyzed.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results</jats:title><jats:p>The review included 421 documents. Most documents were published between 2013 and 2022, with a recent increase. Most studies, originating from high-income countries, focused on home applications and were mainly in the testing and validation stages. Telephones and computers were the predominant devices. Health objectives included monitoring, prevention, and treatment, with interventions utilizing directed communication and personal health monitoring for individuals, and telemedicine and decision support for healthcare providers.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusion</jats:title><jats:p>Increasing integration of technology in older adults’ lives, along with their increasing proficiency, is driving a significant rise in digital health interventions. Despite this growth, further research in middle- and low-income countries, for caregivers and evaluating effectiveness and feasibility of these technological interventions is needed.</jats:p></jats:sec>

    Implementation of a course on disruptive technologies for nursing students in Chile

    Several institutions and countries have recognized the need to integrate disruptive technologies in the training of health professionals. An elective course on disruptive technologies in health for nursing was developed, structured in 5 units: a) innovation in health and nursing, b) creation of apps and virtual environments, c) digital manufacturing for nursing, d) sensors and internet of things, and e) data science in health. For its implementation, the didactic model proposed by Jorba and Sanmartí was considered; and for the evaluation of the units and the impact of the course, Urquidi's extended model of technological adoption was used. Forty-four students participated (39 women and 5 men), with an average age of 23 years. According to the technology acceptance model, statistically significant differences were found between the pre- and post-intervention groups in all dimensions of the model (Wilcoxon test, p &lt; 0.05). In addition, a positive correlation was found between ease of use, subjective norm and intention to use the technologies taught. The implementation of the disruptive technologies course proved to be effective in the development of technological skills among nursing students in Chile.

    Effectiveness of Telerehabilitation in Physical Therapy: A Rapid Overview

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:sec> <jats:title>Objective</jats:title> <jats:p>The purpose of this article was to summarize the available evidence from systematic reviews on telerehabilitation in physical therapy.</jats:p> </jats:sec> <jats:sec> <jats:title>Methods</jats:title> <jats:p>We searched Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases. In addition, the records in PROSPERO and Epistemonikos and PEDro were consulted. Systematic reviews of different conditions, populations, and contexts—where the intervention to be evaluated is telerehabilitation by physical therapy—were included. The outcomes were clinical effectiveness depending on specific condition, functionality, quality of life, satisfaction, adherence, and safety. Data extraction and risk of bias assessment were carried out by a reviewer with non-independent verification by a second reviewer. The findings are reported qualitatively in the tables and figures.</jats:p> </jats:sec> <jats:sec> <jats:title>Results</jats:title> <jats:p>Fifty-three systematic reviews were included, of which 17 were assessed as having low risk of bias. Fifteen reviews were on cardiorespiratory rehabilitation, 14 on musculoskeletal conditions, and 13 on neurorehabilitation. The other 11 reviews addressed other types of conditions and rehabilitation. Thirteen reviews evaluated with low risk of bias showed results in favor of telerehabilitation versus in-person rehabilitation or no rehabilitation, while 17 reported no differences between the groups. Thirty-five reviews with unclear or high risk of bias showed mixed results.</jats:p> </jats:sec> <jats:sec> <jats:title>Conclusions</jats:title> <jats:p>Despite the contradictory results, telerehabilitation in physical therapy could be comparable with in-person rehabilitation or better than no rehabilitation for conditions such as osteoarthritis, low-back pain, hip and knee replacement, and multiple sclerosis and also in the context of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. It is imperative to conduct better quality clinical trials and systematic reviews.</jats:p> </jats:sec> <jats:sec> <jats:title>Impact</jats:title> <jats:p>Providing the best available evidence on the effectiveness of telerehabilitation to professionals, mainly physical therapists, will impact the decision-making process and therefore yield better clinical outcomes for patients, both in these times of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the future. The identification of research gaps will also contribute to the generation of relevant and novel research questions.</jats:p> </jats:sec>

    Implementation of physiotherapy telerehabilitation before and post Covid-19 outbreak: A comparative narrative between South American countries and Australia

    <jats:p>The continuous development in telecommunication tech­nologies has created opportunities for health professionals to optimise healthcare delivery by adopting digital tools into rehabilitation programs (i.e., telerehabilitation). These tech­nological advances, along with the demographic and social characteristics of each country, have made the implementa­tion of telerehabilitation a disparate process across regions. We have gathered the experience of four countries (Australia, Chile, Brazil, and Colombia) in two different regions (Ocea­nia and South America) to recompile the history pre- and post-Covid-19 outbreak until January of 2021, the barriers to, and facilitators of telerehabilitation, and outline the future challenges for these countries.</jats:p>
