Item type:Publication, Diet quality of Chilean schoolchildren: How is it linked to adherence to dietary guidelines?(Public Library of Science (PLoS), 2025-02-06); ;Jacqueline Araneda Flores; ;Tito Pizarro QuevedoMaria Rita Marques de OliveiraIn Chile, the prevalence of overweight among schoolchildren over the age of 5 is approximately 50%, one of the highest in the Americas region. This is largely influenced by the presence of inadequate food environments, characterized by limited access to healthy foods and a high availability of highly processed foods (HPF). This study analyzes food consumption in Chilean schoolchildren and the association of this with the Chilean Dietary Guidelines Based on Foods (DGBF) and the HPF consumption.</jats:p> </jats:sec> <jats:sec id="sec002"> <jats:title>Material and methods</jats:title> <jats:p>The sample (1,094 schoolchildren) was obtained from the baseline of the FONDEF IT18I0016 project, in Santiago-Chile. Anthropometry and socioeconomic data were measured. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative frequency survey featuring images of food groups aligned with DGBF, as well as HPF. All data were collected by trained professional nutritionists. Associations between dependent and independent variables, and potential confounding factors were calculated using logistic regression models with stepwise backward/forward. A p < 0.05 was accepted as significant, using Stata 16.0. <jats:p>Most of the students (54.1%) were with malnutrition by excess and 20.0% exhibited abdominal obesity. Twenty percent of the students met the recommended intake for DGBF (fruits, vegetables, fish, milk and dairy products, legumes, water) and less than 5% did not consume any HPF. Consuming some sub-groups of HPF in moderate quantities (either no consumption or occasional consumption) increases the likelihood of meeting DGBF: candies and sweets (OR: 0.72; p = 0.04), pies with or without filling (OR: 0.63; p = 0.01), and salted snacks (OR: 0.67; p = 0.02).</jats:p> Conclusion Our results contribute to reaffirm the need to enhance healthy food consumption among schoolchildren and to discourage the intake of HPF, particularly focusing on specific sub-groups of HPF that may increase the risk of displacing the consumption of food groups recommended by the DGBF.</jats:p>4 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

El parlamento chileno inició la discusión de proyectos de ley sobre neuroderechos que buscan proteger la integridad de las personas frente a nuevas situaciones planteadas por el desarrollo tecnológico. Item type:Publication, Inbreeding and Gallbladder Cancer Risk: Homozygosity Associations Adjusted for Indigenous American Ancestry, BMI, and Genetic Risk of Gallstone Disease(MDPI AG, 2024-12-17) ;Francisco Ceballos ;Felix Boekstegers ;Dominique Scherer ;Carol Barahona PonceKatherine Marcelain<jats:p>Latin Americans have a rich genetic make-up that translates into heterogeneous fractions of the autosomal genome in runs of homozygosity (FROH) and heterogeneous types and proportions of indigenous American ancestry. While autozygosity has been linked to several human diseases, very little is known about the relationship between inbreeding, genetic ancestry, and cancer risk in Latin Americans. Chile has one of the highest incidences of gallbladder cancer (GBC) in the world, and we investigated the association between inbreeding, GBC, gallstone disease (GSD), and body mass index (BMI) in 4029 genetically admixed Chileans. We calculated individual FROH above 1.5 Mb and weighted polygenic risk scores for GSD, and applied multiple logistic regression to assess the association between homozygosity and GBC risk. We found that homozygosity was due to a heterogeneous mixture of genetic drift and consanguinity in the study population. Although we found no association between homozygosity and overall GBC risk, we detected interactions of FROH with sex, age, and genetic risk of GSD that affected GBC risk. Specifically, the increase in GBC risk per 1% FROH was 19% in men (p-value = 0.002), 30% in those under 60 years of age (p-value = 0.001), and 12% in those with a genetic risk of GSD above the median (p-value = 0.01). The present study highlighted the complex interplay between inbreeding, genetic ancestry, and genetic risk of GSD in the development of GBC. The applied methodology and our findings underscored the importance of considering the population-specific genetic architecture, along with sex- and age-specific effects, when investigating the genetic basis of complex traits in Latin Americans.</jats:p>1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Medical students and graduates’ perceptions of preparation to face a patient's death(2023-01-01) ;Ferrada, Pedro Lavín ;Christian, Dominga RodríguezHistorically, death has been socially accepted, but for the last decades it has been hidden in hospitals, transforming physicians into “death specialists''. Thus, medical graduates should feel prepared to assume this responsibility accompanying the patient and their family through the process. With this in consideration, the present work explores students´ and graduates´ perceptions of preparation to face a patient's death (SPEM) in a Chilean Medical school and identifies SPEM-associated characteristics. An observational study was performed using a digital form sent by email to interns and 2018 and 2019 graduates of the Facultad de Medicina CAS-UDD, in which they were asked about their SPEM and possible SPEM-related variables. The results showed that 63% and 31% of interns and graduates reported feeling inadequately prepared or unprepared to address a patient's death, respectively. During the first two years of their profession, 71% of graduates faced a patient's death. There was a significant correlation between the SPEM and death-facing training. Considering these results and the previous evidence of the positive impact that classes and courses have on SPEM, it is suggested that an obligatory course should be added to improve SPEM in medical students.1Scopus© Citations 1 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

However, they require replication in other ethnicities.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>METHODS</jats:title><jats:p>We performed GWAS on sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) including 539 patients and 854 controls from Argentina and Chile. We combined our results with those from the European Alzheimer and Dementia Biobank (EADB) in a meta‐analysis and tested their genetic risk score (GRS) performance in this admixed population.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>RESULTS</jats:title><jats:p>We detected apolipoprotein E ε4 as the single genome‐wide significant signal (odds ratio = 2.93 [2.37–3.63], <jats:italic>P</jats:italic> = 2.6 × 10<jats:sup>−23</jats:sup>). The meta‐analysis with EADB summary statistics revealed four new loci reaching GWAS significance. Functional annotations of these loci implicated endosome/lysosomal function. Finally, the AD‐GRS presented a similar performance in these populations, despite the score diminished when the Native American ancestry rose.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>DISCUSSION</jats:title><jats:p>We report the first GWAS on AD in a population from South America. Item type:Publication, The socioeconomic distribution of life expectancy and healthy life expectancy in Chile(2023) ;Manuel Antonio Espinoza ;Rodrigo Severino ;Carlos Balmaceda ;Tomas Abbott<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:sec> <jats:title>Background</jats:title> <jats:p>Life expectancy (LE) has usually been used as a metric to monitor population health. In the last few years, metrics such as Quality-Adjusted-Life-Expectancy (QALE) and Health-Adjusted-Life- Expectancy (HALE) have gained popularity in health research, given their capacity to capture health related quality of life, providing a more comprehensive approach to the health concept. We aimed to estimate the distribution of the LE, QALEs and HALEs across Socioeconomic Status in the Chilean population.</jats:p> </jats:sec><jats:sec> <jats:title>Methods</jats:title> <jats:p>Based on life tables constructed using Chiang II´s method, we estimated the LE of the population in Chile by age strata. Probabilities of dying were estimated from mortality data obtained from national registries. Then, life tables were stratified into five socioeconomic quintiles, based on age-adjusted years of education (pre-school, early years to year 1, primary level, secondary level, technical or university). Quality weights (utilities) were estimated for age strata and SES, using the National Health Survey (ENS 2017). Utilities were calculated using the EQ-5D data of the ENS 2017 and the validated value set for Chile. We applied Sullivan´s method to adjust years lived and convert them into QALEs and HALEs.</jats:p> </jats:sec><jats:sec> <jats:title>Results</jats:title> <jats:p>LE at birth for Chile was estimated in 80.4 years, which is consistent with demographic national data. QALE and HALE at birth were 69.8 and 62.4 respectively. Men are expected to live 6.1% less than women. However, this trend is reversed when looking at QALEs and HALEs, indicating the concentration of higher morbidity in women compared to men. The distribution of all these metrics across SES showed a clear gradient in favour of a better-off population-based on education quintiles. The absolute and relative gaps between the lowest and highest quintile were 15.24 years and 1.21 for LE; 18.57 HALYs and 1.38 for HALEs; and 21.92 QALYs and 1.41 for QALEs. More pronounced gradients and higher gaps were observed at younger age intervals.</jats:p> </jats:sec><jats:sec> <jats:title>Conclusion</jats:title> <jats:p>The distribution of LE, QALE and HALEs in Chile shows a clear gradient favouring better-off populations that decreases over people´s lives. Differences in LE favouring women contrast with differences in HALEs and QALEs which favour men, suggesting the need of implementing gender-focused policies to address the case-mix complexity. The magnitude of inequalities is greater than in other high-income countries and can be explained by structural social inequalities and inequalities in access to healthcare.</jats:p> </jats:sec>Scopus© Citations 1 7 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Whole-genome sequencing reveals changes in genomic diversity and distinctive repertoires of T3SS and T6SS effector candidates in Chilean clinical Campylobacter strains(2023) ;Assaf Katz; ; ;Carmen VarelaCristina Muñoz-Rehbein<jats:p><jats:italic>Campylobacter</jats:italic> is the leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide and an emerging and neglected pathogen in South America. This zoonotic pathogen colonizes the gastrointestinal tract of a wide range of mammals and birds, with poultry as the most important reservoir for human infections. Apart from its high morbidity rates, the emergence of resistant strains is of global concern. The aims of this work were to determine genetic diversity, presence of antimicrobial resistance determinants and virulence potential of <jats:italic>Campylobacter</jats:italic> spp. isolated from patients with acute gastrointestinal disease at ‘Clinica Alemana’, Santiago de Chile. The study considered the isolation of <jats:italic>Campylobacter</jats:italic> spp., from stool samples during a 20-month period (January 2020 to September 2021). We sequenced (NextSeq, Illumina) and performed an in-depth analysis of the genome sequences of 88 <jats:italic>Campylobacter jejuni</jats:italic> and 2 <jats:italic>Campylobacter</jats:italic> coli strains isolated from clinical samples in Chile. We identified a high genetic diversity among C. je<jats:italic>juni</jats:italic> strains and the emergence of prevalent clonal complexes, which were not identified in our previous reports. While ~40% of strains harbored a mutation in the gyrA gene associated with fluoroquinolone resistance, no macrolide-resistance determinants were detected. Interestingly, gene clusters encoding virulence factors such as the T6SS or genes associated with long-term sequelae such as Guillain-Barré syndrome showed lineage-relatedness. In addition, our analysis revealed a high degree of variability regarding the presence of fT3SS and T6SS effector proteins in comparison to type strains 81-176, F38011, and NCTC 11168 and 488. Our study provides important insights into the molecular epidemiology of this emerging foodborne pathogen. In addition, the differences observed regarding the repertoire of fT3SS and T6SS effector proteins could have an impact on the pathogenic potential and transmissibility of these Latin American isolates, posing another challenge in characterizing the infection dynamics of this emergent and neglected bacterial pathogen.</jats:p>29Scopus© Citations 8
