    Arsenic contamination in water remains a critical global challenge, particularly in rural and resource-limited regions. Clays have been widely studied as cost-effective and efficient adsorbents for arsenic removal. This systematic review provides a comprehensive analysis of the application of clays in arsenic adsorption, focusing on clay types, operational units, and study methodologies. The review classifies the adsorption mechanisms, highlights key factors influencing adsorption performance—such as pH, ionic strength, and surface modifications—and examines the effectiveness of various modifications. Furthermore, the study categorizes adsorption research into kinetic, iso-thermal, thermodynamic, and efficiency studies, providing insights into the state of the art and the experimental conditions that govern arsenic removal. It also discusses the scalability and practical application of clay-based adsorption technologies, emphasizing gaps in field validation, regeneration studies, and large-scale implementation. The findings highlight the potential of natural and modified clays in arsenic remediation, while underscoring the need for further research to optimize adsorption conditions and enhance sustainability in water treatment systems.

This study investigates water consumption in two areas with limited water resources—the Salar de Atacama and Salar de Atacama-Vertiente Pacifico basins in Chile’s Antofagasta Region—with the aim of developing strategies that incorporate social and environmental aspects into water management. A qualitative approach was employed that involved a focus group with twelve water management representatives and surveys of the general population (468 responses). Additionally, the current state of water rights in the two basins was examined and the feasibility of the proposed strategies was assessed. The findings reveal that the mining industry’s development approach is mostly viewed as negative, mainly due to inadequate community engagement, confidential consumption data, and limited government oversight. The quantitative findings indicate that 53.8% of respondents see the main obstacle as the lack of a solution satisfying both parties. Additionally, 35.3%, 24.4%, and 22.4% believe transparency, objective information provision, and detailed resource usage disclosure by mining companies would help. Adopting a comprehensive water stewardship approach that considers social and environmental factors would enable a novel contribution to a more effective and sustainable water resource management system in northern Chile, mitigating communities’ negative perceptions of the industry and facilitating the integration of communities and involved agents. Therefore, improved management and transparent collaboration among stakeholders are essential for responsible water resource use in mining.

    This paper examines the different impressions and perspectives related to the implementation of electromobility in log transportation via trucks with a load capacity of up to 45 tons in the forestry sector of the eighth and sixteenth regions of Chile. The objective of this work is to establish the critical variables identified and perceived by key stakeholders of the forestry industry the correct implementation of high tonnage electric trucks. To this effect, a qualitative methodological study with a non-experimental design is proposed, which is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with stakeholders of the forestry sector of the study area. A convenience sample is employed, which was applied to four businessmen in the sector, three executives from the main forestry companies, and two truck distributor representatives. The data show that there is currently little knowledge due to the lack of specific projects and platforms for disseminating information that consider this technology in the field, but, on the contrary, they show a willingness to implement pilot plans aiming for the perceived economic sustainability of electromobility. A concentration of critical aspects is evidenced, which must be addressed in order to implement electromobility in forest transport, and which, given handling by public-private work, would enable the sector and the country to obtain the economic and environmental benefits of this technology.

    Este trabajo analiza las principales brechas que influyen en las PyMEs TI (pequeñas y medianas empresas de tecnología de la información) con metodología tradicional, al iniciar la implementación de metodologías ágiles para la gestión de proyectos. El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar las principales brechas existentes antes de implementar metodologías ágiles en una PyME TI con metodología tradicional para la gestión de proyectos. Para lograrlo se propone una aproximación cualitativa a las opiniones de tres gerentes, dos ingenieros de proyecto y seis analistas programadores de la empresa, basada en entrevistas semiestructuradas, considerando una muestra por conveniencia, para entender las dificultades existentes en la empresa de estudio, contrastando dicha realidad mediante encuestas dirigidas a 29 profesionales de áreas TI de otras organizaciones. Los resultados del análisis revelan que las principales brechas para la implementación de metodologías ágiles en la PyME son la cultura organizacional en desacuerdo con la agilidad, la falta de compromiso de la gerencia y la resistencia al cambio. Se concluye que la propuesta resulta ser efectiva para conocer las principales brechas a resolver antes de comenzar la implementación de una metodología ágil en una PyME TI, permitiendo alinear a la organización con la agilidad.

    Digital Transformation: Opportunity or Threat to Employability?
    (2021) ;

    This paper presents a critical analysis of the Digital Transformation’s (DT) effects on employability within organizations in Chile, providing an action reference framework for competitiveness in the field. To achieve this, a qualitative approach to the opinions of a convenience sample of executives and leaders was employed, based on semi-structured interviews, to understand how to address this type of transformation. The analysis indicates that, having long-term policies for the development of new skills in their collaborators is a critical success factor. These policies are summarized in three stages, through a reference framework for the generation of specific actions in pursuit of the development of a successful DT process. DT fosters a cultural change in the entities to generate capacities that allow them to anticipate the evolution of the market and adapt quickly to it, for which it is fundamental to promote the training of new technical and behavioral skills in collaborators, in addition to encouraging them to self-train.

    In Chile, as in many other areas of the world, water supplies have been poorly managed and water availability is decreasing. In order to manage water resources more sustainably and equitably, it is necessary to understand and predict their supply and use considering the characteristics of a particular zone. This study aimed to develop a conceptual model for water management in the Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins Region in Chile. The model considers the water needs of industries with production activities, human consumption, and the ecological flow of each sub-basin in the area. The results show that the proposed model contributes to the understanding of the critical variables, their agents, and the interaction between the hydric demands, which enables the prioritization of human consumption and the ecological flow. Furthermore, the cross-analysis between the offer and demand indicates that current and predicted consumption levels will only be sustainable up to the year 2031. The findings may be of use to decision-makers seeking to improve water management plans in this area and elsewhere, and to others interested in modeling water management in different areas.
