Item type:Publication, A Business Case for Marine Protected Areas: Economic Valuation of the Reef Attributes of Cozumel Island(2021) ;José Alberto Lara-Pulido ;Ángela Mojica ;Aaron Bruner ;Alejandro Guevara-SanginésCecilia Simon<jats:p>Tourism to Cozumel Island generates USD 762 million annually in local economic activity, and 111 visitors stay in local hotels for each inhabitant. The island’s coast is its principal attraction, yet water quality and reef health are threatened. This paper studies the link between the local economy and management of Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, using a choice experiment to assess the economic value visitors assign to underwater visibility, biodiversity, and visitor congestion in reef areas. We found that, on average, tourists are willing to pay USD 190 per visit to avoid a projected decrease in biodiversity, USD 120 per visit to prevent a projected decline in visibility, and USD 98 to avoid high congestion during reef visits. We find high heterogeneity in willingness to pay estimates, which may be useful for targeting both conservation and marketing efforts. On the other hand, increasing the reef access fee from USD 2 to USD 6 could fully fund effective protected area management, with no substantial effect on visitors’ consumer surplus. Results suggest that a conservation surcharge could be added to all tours, with little impact on visitation, and that significantly increasing private sector collaboration and government spending on conservation would be good economic choices.</jats:p>5Scopus© Citations 17 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Jaimes<jats:p>This article presents a correlation model for pseudo-acceleration, peak ground acceleration, and peak ground velocity residuals using a database of Mexican subduction interface earthquakes at rock sites (NEHRP Class B). A mixed-effect regression model, a ground motion model, and 40 event recordings (418 records) with moment magnitude between five and eight were used to develop a magnitude-independent correlation model. This region-specific model yields consistently higher correlation values compared with similar studies developed for shallow crustal regions and other subduction zones worldwide, particularly for pseudo-acceleration values at distant periods. These results support the idea of using a region-specific and mechanism-specific correlation model for Mexico's subduction zone.</jats:p>9Scopus© Citations 16 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Municipal Green Purchasing in Mexico: Policy Adoption and Implementation Success(2020) ;Ana R. Leal ;David Perez-Castillo; Bryan W. Husted<jats:p>In this paper, we seek to determine what factors drive the adoption of green purchasing among municipalities in Mexico and the success of their implementation. Given the lack of research and theory in the area, this study is exploratory in nature. We applied the green purchasing survey developed by Arizona State University to all municipalities in Mexico with a population of 25,000 or more inhabitants. Using the least absolute shrinkage and selector operator method (LASSO), we reduced the set of measures, which we then employed in a logistic regression to predict whether the municipality would adopt a green purchasing policy. We found that complementary environmental practices, department rules, and city-wide contracts to reduce purchasing costs have a positive and significant effect on the propensity to adopt green purchasing policies, but the time for routine low-cost purchases has a negative effect on green purchasing policy adoption. Then, using two-stage least squares, we developed a model of the factors leading to successful implementation of green purchasing. We found that complementary environmental policies, environmental practices, environmental program knowledge, and city-wide contracts to reduce purchasing costs are positively and significantly related to successful implementation. However, department resources and the time for routine low-cost purchase are significant, but negatively related.</jats:p>3 1Scopus© Citations 11
